Danielle's outdoor team struggled a bit this year, but the girls played hard, worked together, and improved over the course of the season. The last game of the year was a bit of a trek for us; we traveled nearly an hour and a half to get to the field. As a matter of fact, the place was so difficult to get to that both my GPS and my navigation app on my phone led us to strange places in search of the field. Elizabeth, our name for the GPS, had us turn down a country road out in the middle of nowhere. When she said, "Arriving at destination, on left," what she meant was, "Apparently, you'll be playing smack-dab in the middle of an orchard." Strike one. We employed my phone's app instead, which I assume is at least a little more up-to-date. (Elizabeth is a tad outdated at this point.) We knew we were close, but didn't know exactly where we needed to turn to get to the soccer complex. My phone directed us to a dead end. ("Arriving at destination ahead.") In somebody's driveway. Nope--also not the spot we were likely to find droves of pony-tailed pre-teen soccer players.
A couple of phone calls and a several more minutes of roaming around the great 'city' of Porterville, and we finally did, in fact, arrive at our destination. If nothing else, at least Danielle and I had an adventure getting there. And, to the girls' credit, although they ultimately lost the game, the girls never gave up and played hard until the final whistle blow. It was a close game, and Danielle made some really spectacular saves in the goalie box, rolling and diving to block some pretty impressive shots on goal. Her coach told her it was the best game he'd seen her play all season, and I'd have to agree. Now we take a breather for the month of December, and then jump back into the world of indoor soccer in January.
