Anastasia

February 22, 2022
Tonight I got to head out to the theater once again to see a production of Anastasia.  This used to be one of Brianna's very favorite movies when she was young.  Weirdly, although she watched it a hundred times with me, I didn't remember much about the plotline.  I remembered, of course, that it was about the Romanovs and the daughter who survived the attack on her family, but beyond that I hadn't held onto the details of the story.  I think Bree and I watched it so often that I got bored by it and blocked it out.  The show has some pretty dark moments, but lots of comedy, too.  I thought the actors were all very strong, especially their singing voices.  Unlike when I went to see Waitress last month, I didn't have any trouble understanding the lyrics during the musical numbers.  What was really incredible, though, was the digital sets.  I don't think I've ever seen a show that relied so heavily on projected scenes, but the detail and quality were so beautiful and intricate that it definitely enhanced the production in a very different way than a traditional set might have.  I would imagine that a traditional stage set for a production like this would be incredibly expensive and difficult to transport, but the projected screens allowed for a lot more flexibility.  Done poorly, it would have detracted from the experience, but the quality here was stunning.  Couple that with a charming date, and it all made for a very lovely evening indeed!

Next to Normal

February 19, 2022
After yesterday's concert, Danielle and I stayed in a cute little hotel room and then made our way back to Riverside.  I dropped her off and then continued on to Lisa's house.  Lisa just bought a new house, so this would be my first time getting to stay there.  Our goal was for me to help her do some setting up and decorating at the house, but as usual we tried to pack way too much into our weekend.  We did go and pick up a bunch of household stuff that we'd won at an online auction to help add to her new household.  Then we went to see a production of Next to Normal.  It's a play that I had seen before, but Lisa hadn't, nor had Phil, who joined us.  It's a powerful but pretty heavy and dramatic play with some difficult mental health subject matter.  I'm not sure how much Phil enjoyed it--he had no idea what the play was about--but Lisa and I really liked it.  They were some talented actors, and the venue itself was intimate and comfortable.  I'm really glad we were able to go. I have really missed concerts and live theater in the time of the pandemic.

Afterward we considered going to some dance classes, but we opted instead to grab some sushi for dinner.  We found an excellent little hole-in-the-wall place that was well worth it.  Then we just decided to get back home and start putting away the auction finds.  Even though we didn't make it to the dance classes, we still felt like we had a pretty productive day.

Hello Dolly

July 31, 2011

Bree decided to audition for a role in the ensemble of the local community theater's production of Hello Dolly this summer. It's her last hurrah in theater in this town, since she's headed for San Diego for college in August. The rehearsal schedule was grueling, and the dance numbers were intricate and difficult, but the cast pulled off a show they could really be proud of.

Feeling Wicked?

April 13, 2011 When we first heard the Broadway in Fresno schedule for this season last fall, the show everyone was talking about was Wicked. It was one of the biggest reasons we decided to buy season tickets this year. Bree's been wanting me to take her to see the show in San Francisco or L.A. for a few years now, but finances and timing kept me from being able to do so. Doug and I were also thrilled at the idea of getting to see the show, and eagerly anticipated it all year long. The show did not disappoint. It's a big, beautiful spectacle, with the set almost as much a character as, well, the characters. The sets were just gorgeous! The costuming was amazing as well. We actually saw it on a night that the understudy for Glinda (or Galinda) performed, but the talented actress was spot-on; I did not miss having the principal actress there at all. The actress, as well as the actress who portrayed Elphaba, fully inhabited their characters, breathing vivacity and humor and conflict into their performances. I loved Elphaba's droll sense of humor and felt her pain at being ostracized. I adored Glinda's sass and spunk. I was a little concerned that the plot line might make it difficult to have sympathy for Glinda, who is somewhat vacuous in prep school. How could they manage to make her likeable by the time Wicked's plotline caught up to the adored character she is in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? Similarly, how would they manage to make the heroine of Wicked fit comfortably with the image of the Wicked Witch of the West from the beloved classic? Suffice it to say, they did. Rather, Gregory MacGuire, author of Wicked, did. The author, whose book was adapted for the musical, did in fact manage to draw the connections and parallels between his imagined precursor to Baum's world of Oz in clever and sometimes unexpected ways. The production manages to sift through all the meticulous detail of the novel and pare it down to a mere three hours' production that brings its audience beautifully and seamlessly by curtain fall to the the beginning of the story that we all know and love. Pirates of Penzance

January 30, 2011

Our good friend Jeffrey Lee played Samuel in a production of the operetta Pirates of Penzance this past weekend, so a big group of us all went to go support him and enjoy the show. We made a whole day of it by meeting up for drinks first, and then heading out to dinner together afterward. Wonderful show, wonderful friends, wonderful day!Pat, Jimmy, Jennifer, Rosa, Jeffrey, me, Doug, and Michele

To Be, Or Not To Be...

January 29, 2011

That is the question, no? For Bree, it was To Be Or Not To Be in our school's production of Hamlet. She wasn't thrilled about it; her interest falls much more in line with the musical theater variety of drama. There's not much singing or dancing or gallivanting about in Hamlet. Not much cavorting either, unless you count Ophelia's mad scene, which kind of doesn't count, because she doesn't even realize she cavorting. There's a lot of sadness and betrayal, some daddy issues and some self-esteem issues, and a pretty impressive body count by the end. Bree's like her mom--more likely to want to surround herself with puppies and kittens and rainbows. Happy ending sort of stuff, you know, where the guy gets the girl at the end, and they sing a song and live happily ever after. Anti-Hamlet, if you will.

But still, she found herself somewhat obliged (by virtue of her inclusion in the drama class), to be in the show. It was *ahem* suggested that she should be in it. To her chagrin, she learned that suddenly her after school free time became her after school rehearsal time, all for an opportunity to stand on stage and be A Lady In Waiting. And a lovely Lady In Waiting she was. And she found that as she rehearsed, as she waited, being in the play wasn't as bad as she thought it might be. Sure, it was time-consuming, but she got to hang out with lots of her good friends--likeminded theater arts kinds of folks--so waiting wasn't just waiting. It was spending time with people she loves. When I went to opening night last Thursday and met up with her after the show, she was positively glowing, absolutely in her element and floating on the comraderie and sense of family that grows among cast members of a show.

Bah Humbug!

November 18, 2010

The curtain finally rose on Danielle's elementary school play, Bah Humbug, this week. After weeks of hard work--nearly every day after school--the kids got to show off their skills in a retelling of A Christmas Carol. When Danielle first decided she wanted to audition for drama in 4th grade, I was a little skeptical. She struggled with speech issues when she was very young, and there was still some residual effect even then, although she had made great strides in improving her speech by that time. In 4th grade, she was cast as a chorus member, and by the time the play wrapped up, she was hooked and already looking forward to the next year's production. In fifth grade, she was once again cast as a chorus member, and again had a positive experience.

This year when the cast list went up, she was thrilled to find she'd landed a speaking role. She had several lines, along with some songs along with the rest of the chorus. I was so proud to see her up on stage, not looking nervous or sheepish, projecting her voice and enunciating clearly--something I could never have done at her age, by the way. She did a beautiful job, as all the kids did and I loved getting to see her in both of the evening performances. I'm thrilled that she is already thinking about continuing on with drama as she heads into junior high next year.

Beauty and the Beast

November 14, 2010

Danielle and I had our own little Girls' Night Out last week when we went to see a Broadway Across America production of Beauty and the Beast. We decided to get dressed up and make a fancy night of it, just we two. Our seats were pretty good, even though we were up in the balcony. For a show with such grand productions as "Be Our Guest", sometimes a field of vision from a bit farther away is more desirable than being up close and personal. The moving sets were pretty spectacular, and the characters were just as endearing as the characters we both loved from the Disney movie. Danielle and I both decided our favorite number was a beer-stein-tapping number in the tavern with Gaston and the locals. The choreography was a lot of fun to watch. I think since Danielle's getting ready to be in her own school's production that runs next week, it was especially cool for her to get to see actors in top form entertaining their audiences.

Although we both really enjoyed the show and thought it was well-worth the price of admission, I think we both loved even more just getting to spend Mommy-Daughter time together. We rounded out the evening with ice-cream Sundaes after the show. Wonderful night!

Transformer Mom

October 10, 2010

I feel like I've actually become my mini-van in the past two weeks--a Soccer Mom Transformer. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I love that my kids are involved and active. I think it helps keep them balanced. And to be sure, there will be days in my not very far off future when I'll miss these days, these snippets of conversations we have traveling to and fro, often one-on-one while I transport one kid or another to the soccer field, or play practice, or choir practice, or Robotics, just to name a few. Yup, I'm tired at the end of the nights, and the van is filled with the accessories of youth perpetually, but the alternative simply isn't an alternative. Time flies, and before I know it my mini-van will become superfluous and will transform and shrink into a sensible two-door car fit for one whose kids have moved upward and onward. Until then, I'll relish in the miles I put on the road with the kids, and do my best to make the most of that time together.

Wizard of Oz--Girls' Night Out

July 28, 2010

Our local community theater group put on a production of Wizard of Oz, and Bree thought it would be fun to have a girls' night out with just her sister and her cousin. They got all dressed up and had a fantastic time!

Tough Chick

March 29, 2010

When Danielle decided she wanted to play catcher for her softball team, I figured we'd be in for a little bruising here and there. So when she came home with her leg and knees covered in purple, pink and sickly green, I asked her how many times she'd been pelted with the ball in order to come home with those badges of honor.
Badges of honor, my foot! When the truth came out, little Missy didn't earn her bruises taking one for the team. In what I don't consider her most bright decision, she had decided while playing at a friends house to engage in a friendly little game of 'kidnappers.' The girl voluntarily allowed her friend to tie her up and put her in the garage until the 'detective' came and found her. While tied up, Miss Grace thought she'd reposition herself, and she tripped and got into a fight with an errant scooter. She beamed with pride telling the story though, because she didn't cry, so her friends thought she was a pretty tough chick.

Hopefully she'll stick to good old-fashioned hide 'n seek in the future, sans rope. Purple's not her best color.

Guys and Dolls Opening Night

March 14, 2010

We took the family to the high school's opening night of Guys and Dolls this weekend. Although Bree has been involved in choir and drama throughout high school, this is the first Buchanan theater production she's been a part of. Weeks of hard work and long hours went into the show, and it was fun to see how it all paid off. I was a proud mama seeing her up on the stage! I also loved seeing several of my students in the show--I love getting to see the sides of my kids that don't necessarily come out in the classroom.

Two shows down, four more shows 'til the final curtain falls next Saturday night.
