No More Running for the Border

November 10, 2009

I just read that the Borders Express in our local mall is closing. A few years back, B. Dalton closed its doors--the one whose manager said would never close because it was the only free-standing book store in the city. Now, we're losing the last of the retail book stores still standing.

I know it's just business; Borders Express is competing with Amazon, and even it's own big sister store in Fresno, but it saddens me profoundly. What does it say about a community this size that it can't even sustain a single retail bookstore?

  1. Borders has been struggling for years. I sure we hope don't lose the one near us. I really love it, although I haven't had much disposable income to throw at them lately.

  2. That is a bummer. We have a Barnes&Noble near us that I love - even though (like P&I) I can't really afford to buy books these days.

  3. That is really sad.

The world needs book stores (although I guess I'm cheap and more of a library girl myself so maybe I'm part of the problem.).

I think I'm inspired to buy a few books as Christmas presents this year.
