Dreams

Don't you just hate it when you have a bad dream and wake up carrying that sense of fear or dread or frustration with you? Sometimes dreams are so vivid that you feel like you actually experienced them in real life. That's pretty great when they're good dreams, like, say you got to meet and hang out for the day with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, or you dreamed that you were lying on a sunny beach in Cancun, cabana boy bringing you drinks to your heart's content. When they're dreams of the not-so-pleasant variety, though, sometimes that unsettling feeling you wake up with can be hard to shake for the rest of the day. I'm going to need to do something interesting today to switch my mental gears.

  1. I know what you mean. I was in the military 20 years ago and while it was a good experience for me and I'm glad I did it, I wouldn't want to be back at that point in my life again. So when I have very realistic dreams that I'm still on board a ship, it does take a few hours to shake the sense of imprisonment I feel.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Christopher. I marched in band and drum corps 25 years or so ago, and still I occasionally have vivid dreams of forgetting the drill or the routine. I think those dreams are often related to those things we were utterly immersed in at the time. Amazing how our dreams can take us right back to the immediacy of our past experiences.
