In Honor of Valentine's Day

February 14, 2011

I'm always a little sad when my high school kids who are not currently in a relationship get either cynical or just plain melancholy on February 14th when they see others walking around with stuffed animals and balloons and roses. I think everyone, single or taken, should be able to celebrate love and happiness on Valentine's Day--celebrate the love they have and are capable of, celebrate everything they have to give. I gave my students each a little Valentine's candy with one of these quotes/affirmations attached today, because everyone needs a little love on Valentine's Day.

To wish you were someone else is to waste the person you are.

Believe in yourself and they may come true; believe in yourself and they will come true.

You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.

Whatever you are doing, love yourself for doing it. Whatever you are feeling, love yourself for feeling it.

Be content to seem what you really are.

Don’t worry so much about your self-esteem. Worry more about your character. Integrity is its own reward.

I’ve learned to trust myself, to listen to truth, to not be afraid of it and to not try to hide it.

Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.

The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.

Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option.

Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.

Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.

Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.

Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe, shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish.

Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.

Love is like an earthquake—unpredictable, a little scary, but when the hard part is over you realize how lucky you truly are.

Love is just love. It can never be explained.

You can close your eyes to the things you do not want to see, but you cannot close your heart to the things you do not want to feel.

Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.

Love is not blind; it simply enables one to see things others fail to see.

We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love.

Eventually you will come to understand that love heals everything, and love is all there is.

Be happy. It’s one way of being wise.

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.

Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.

There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.

Happiness is like a kiss…you must share it to enjoy it.

Some pursue happiness—others create it.

**Obviously, these are not all my own words of wisdom--just quotes I've collected that I think are meaningful.
